How I resolved tech debt with backend engineers?
To address the tech debt of disjointed data tables (the main reason the platform hosts so many standalone apps), I collaborated closely with backend engineers to align on data structures and streamline integration. Through an audit of existing tables, we identified inconsistencies and redundancies that were impacting usability. The engineering team developed a unified data model, consolidating key information into a cohesive system. Simply put, whenever a client ID is used, that information should seamlessly carry through without being requested again. I provided updated design specifications and prototypes to ensure alignment, while the engineers restructured APIs to enable seamless data flow.
How to drive alignment in a large team?
One big challenge in this project was managing a large stakeholder team (see below org. chart), including external consultants and business leaders, which required significant effort to achieve alignment. I started and hosted weekly stakeholder workshops, regular stand-ups with PM and Dev teams, and utilized Product Management tools such as Jira and Confluence to keep stakeholders aligned.
